I am always amzead when a company files for bankruptcy and manages to stay in business. I enjoyed watching Circut City just go away. I like that nothing has replaced their empty stores in hundres of malls around the country. This sounds strange, but what actually happens when a company defaults on its debt is that it stops paying its creditors. They still have cash flow, which they use to pay salaries and keep operating. They just tell their creditors that they can't both keep operating and make the interest and principal payments. Bankruptcy law aside, creditors tend to go along with this because if the company just stops operating, they will get absolutely none of their money back, and they might get some of it back eventually if the company continues to operate. And a company in this situation can't take out new debt except at very high interest rates, so there is an incentive not to default, unless management consists of total sleazebags just out to plunder the company.In fact, its not that much different with personal bankruptcy. Unless the loans are with a certain type of creditor, its not like you die once you go bankrupt. You may still have income and will still spend money on food and gas and stuff.But I do think we need to see more retail chains going bankrupt and nothing at all replacing them. We just got to the point where we had too much retail in this country.
